Today's opening day of the 2019 NSW State Pennant Finals proved an extremely tough one for our Zone 9 sides as they were able to win just 3 of their 14 matches across Grades 1-7.

Fortunately, Belrose (Grade 1), Mona Vale (Grade 2) and Asquith (Grade 3) are still in the mix challenging for a spot in Saturday afternoon's quarter-finals after each won their Round 1 match this morning before losing in Round 2 this afternoon.

The Belrose Bulls (Grade 1) opened their campaign with a hard-fought 61-54 victory over Westport before coming up against one of the pre-tournament favourites Warilla this afternoon and going down 46-78.  Mona Vale (Grade 2) enjoyed a comprehensive 82-43 thrashing of Kempsey-Macleay RSL and then narrowly lost 54-60 to Engadine.  Asquith (Grade 3) earned a solid 62-54 win over Armidale City before losing 52-64 to Scone in Round 2.

The title challenges of Asquith (Grade 4), Mona Vale (Grade 5), Belrose (Grade 6) and Harbord (Grade 7) are almost certainly over after they all lost both their sectional matches today.

Asquith (Grade 4) lost 54-66 to Junee and 46-62 to Pennant Hills.  Mona Vale (Grade 5) were probably the hard-luck story of the day losing 57-67 to Gymea despite winning on 2 rinks and then losing 62-63 to WPWC in a last-end thriller.  Belrose (Grade 6) lost 55-76 to East Cessnock and 63-74 to Forster while Harbord (Grade 7) struggled all day, going down 30-94 to Nelson Bay and 46-84 to Ballina.

Further reports at the end of Day 2 with hopefully some better news!!
