NEW BOWLER DAY PROVES A RESOUNDING SUCCESS...ALBEIT LONG OVERDUE

IF YOUR PENNANT SKIP IS SMILING . . . REMIND HIM OF THIS PHOTO OVER THE NEXT 2 MONTHS

WHILE the zone's inaugural N.B.E. (New Bowler Event) was acclaimed an outstanding success by the 100 attendees (over 70 new bowlers from 20 clubs), many could be excused if this experience has changed their initial concept of how the game can be played.

Contributing factors could range from Harbord's first class playing surface, through to the diversity and playing tactics of the various skips.

It could also have proved an eye opener for bowlers more accustomed to their Wednesday social triples, and in particular, those anticipating their initial pennant season.

Many of the dozen or so volunteer skips currently play either Metropolitan or the zone's top grade pennants, and their vast experience ranges from  an Australian pair's win through to both State championships and representation.

While their skipping fundamentals are basically similar, their concept of how they read a head and call shots can vary quite alarmingly.

Their entire armoury of shots or stress levels may not have been tested in this exercise.

However, attendees shouldn't under estimate their personalities, that can alter quite dramatically in pennants.

Particularly after his skip has played his last bowl, and two or more of his third's fingers hang flaccidly downwards.

Indications of other abnormal behaviour is an accepted idiosyncrasy.

Undoubtedly the driving force behind this NBE event has been zone selector, Dennis Taylor, who initiated the idea when Zone President in 2014. (Speeding tickets are unknown in this zone.)

Steve Smith’s team of R.Balfos (Lane Cove), A.Nyiro (Mosman) G.Scott (Neutral Bay) came out the overall winner on a close count back from Geoff Hamilton’s side of G. Neal (Seaforth), (sub), S. Ogden (Warrawee).
